What is Munkacs Foundation?
Munkacs Foundation is an initiative of a number of people from Hoogkerk in cooperation with Eastern European Mission (Oost Europa Zending)
The foundation wants to help the population of the Romacamp in Munkacs to get out of their socially isolated situation. The camp has about 6000 inhabitants. The foundation wants to show in practice that the biblical mission in Mathew 25:34-40 and 28:16-20 is also meant for these people. Also the foundation wants young people from the rich West to get some knowledge of the, often, abominable circumstances in which people live over there. The foundation organizes a trip to Munkacs for young people who help with work there. The participants pay for their own trip. The foundation was started in 2007.
The work is done in several domains:
In 2005 the foundation started by building a public bath house on the camp. They worked on it for two years. The gypsies manage the bath house themselves. The last couple of years they built a number of houses together with the gypsies. In 2011 they started the placing of 100 toilets all over the campsite. At the end of 2012 this work was done. in 2013 we will try to realise a medical post at the Romacamp.
Every year the foundation runs a holidaycamp for the Roma children that never leave the camp.
Fuel and food
In winter the foundation finances food and fuel for the poorest people on the camp. The Romas deliver it to the people themselves.
Last but not least the foundation arranges the transport of clothes tot Munkacs every year.
How is it funded?
To pay for all those activities campaigns are held all through the year. Many other inhabitants of Hoogkerk take part in this fundraising. There are also a lot of sponsors.
How long will this go on?
The gypsies are held in contempt and discriminated by their surroundings. Although practical support is important, it is also essential to give them moral support. That is also why the Munkacs Foundation wants to keep doing the work in the long run.
